The global pandemic has shattered the world. Not only in financial and health terms. We see how Private Data becomes undermined during the crisis.
Some countries e.g. Germany, South Korea have a clear standpoint on open data policy. This allowed them to become leaders in controlling the disease (COVID-19) within their borders. They managed to identify contacts by tracking bank transactions and phone GPS signals.
We also have tech giants (Google and Apple) collaborating together to release software for disease control. Your phone picks up and is being picked up by other phones via Bluetooth and it allows to identify contacts who have been in close proximity to people infected with the disease.
All these novel measures should be evaluated cautiously. On the one hand, these measures were super effective and helped to save thousands of lives. On the other hand, it raised many data privacy questions and may have even compromised someone’s life.
We believe that data privacy should be treated differently in different situations. Global concerns must lift off many Data Privacy regulations for common good. Artificial Intelligence cannot function without data and making data open to innovative people accelerates invention of new solutions. This can be well demonstrated in healthcare. Better patient data access helps to save thousands of lives and improve workflow in the healthcare settings.
